Week 10, Liberia and Ivory Coast
December, 27th
Woke up feverish, with a nasty cough and a running nose. It looked like i had caught a cold .... at 32 degrees...
We left for Monrovia (Liberia's capital) and at 4 we arrived at the campsite (a shitty place).
Put up our tents, i took a walk to check the environment, went back to the campsite for dinner and went to sleep at 8.
That long night of sleep really helped and i felt a lot better the next day
December, 28th:
Woke up at 7.15, felt a lot better.
The rest had to go the the embassies for visas, but Andy and i had all our visas already, so....
First a long walk to an ATM that worked ... the fifth we found did, and so ... brought back 40 us$ (yes, that is what they use here, next to the Liberian Dollar), a cup of coffee in a fancy restaurant (instant coffee though!!), a walk along the beach, where we ran into a church service (on the beach)... these services are a bit "free-er" than we are used to ... half way the ceremony there was a rope pulling competition ...
Returned to the campsite at 4, took a shower, and sipped a beer or two in some local placed up here...
Diner was nice, and finally took the time to update my blog...
Going for another long night of sleep to (hopefully) completely recover...
December, 29th:
Unfortunately i did not fully recover ... coughing is a bit better, but still a bit feverish. May have (had) a sun stroke.
So breakfasted, and after a long shower, including a shave and doing the laundry i felt better(-ish) ... but still not fully recovered.
Off to a nice coffee place we discovered yesterday (Linda's House)
The coffee was good, despite being instant.
Met Stephan there who needed a recovery beer from shopping for cook-group.
I made a beach walk that afternoon (locals tried to make me pay for crossing the bridge over the lagoon, but hey ... i'm not crazy Henkie) and found a nice view from the balcony terrace of our campsite ...
Slept good, but found put that the dogs had stolen my flip-flops. Luckily Jordan saw that and saved them. (i already used that flip-flops on my Alaska to Brazil trip, so they deserve a better end then being chewed up by dogs).
December, 30th:
Rose at 6 or so, Packed and left for a bushcamp near some water falls. Lots of attention on the way as always ...
A relatively short and smooth drive, lunch in a small village ...
and a good swim in the falls ...
I had cook-group and (of course) Aussie Dave made some fantastic chicken breast schnitzels.
A beer afterwards and games, played at the central place of the campsite ...
December, 31st:
Rose late, made breakfast for the group. I was the egg-man (cookoo to you)...

| Camp-site by daylight |
By 12.30 on our way for a bush camp close to the border with Ivory Coast.
We could stay on a football field at a very small village near the border.
The attention we got, when we started cooking ....
And since it was new years eve, Andy and I shared a nice bottle of wine.
Three of the ladies celebrated with the kids ... and did an outstanding job. So much fun!!!
I did not make it until midnight, so went to my tent at 10 or so, slept good and woke up in 2024.
January, 1st:
Happy new year!!
On our way to the border around 9....
All went smooth, so we had lunch in a big town (found a 3 dollar wine) , a few hours later and arrived at our (very nice!) campsite in Man, a large town in Ivory Coast, round 3 pm.
Unpacked, showered, took a beer, dinnered, shared the wine at our tents and slept good.
January, 2nd:
Rose at 7.30, breakfasted.
Rasjhree, Andy and I made a long walk to some cascaded waterfalls near Man.
Walked back, bought 5 bottles of 1 dollar wine, 2nd shower of the day, and relaxed the afternoon away.
Updating blog now.
Andy and Rashree just came back with 3 beers.
Cheers!!
Drank the beers (and some very cheap, but good wine), had diner, ad another wine (they are 0.5 L bottles, to be shared with 3 man, so... it sounds more than it was), and had an early sleep.
